As well at the VAT increase train fares in East Anglia have already increased by an average of 5.9% bringing a gloomy news to commuters across Suffolk. For example, according to the Bury Free Press a ticket from Stowmarket to London will increase by 7.9%; thats £32.90 increased to £35.50. While that may not seem like a lot to some, for others it all adds up. Advanced tickets will also reflect the change.

Stowmarket Commuters Face Higher Train Fares in 2011
Commuters at Stowmarket feel united dispair.
' Public transport feels like a luxury these days. Gets more and more expensive.' Matthew from Stowmarket
'Where is this money going? Why has it gone up, the service is usually awful at the best of times! Amie from Stowmarket
A campaign for better transport will be launching a new initiative in response to this, called 'Fair Fares Now'. They call for the Government to reverse its decision which is rumoured to increase up 31% in 2015.
Do you commute from or to Stowmarket? What is your view on the current service and increase in the fare prices. Do you mind or is it just another price increase we should accept? '

The fair rises would be easier to cope with if I actually got a seat once in a while. On a train from Cambridge to Stowmarket a few weeks ago I had to stand the whole way.

ReportI agree with you completely Nick, and those monthly passes are exactly as you say. I have to buy a monthly for work and it only really saves me money if I plan extra trips, which i do to make it worthwhile but I only end up spending money at the final destination !
I travel between Stowmarket and Ipswich every week day, its £4-5 just to make this 10 minute journey. A bit sick if you ask me. But maybe Im wrong and I should be more grateful for such convenient technology? Maybe I take it for granted.

ReportYeah it's getting more expensive but with petrol on the up too, I'd argue that train travel is better value for money. Of course both are overpriced but I got a train from Bury to Norwich (via Stowmarket) last Saturday and it was £11 return. It would probably now cost about the same in petrol and the train is much safer and easier and I could snooze most of the way too!
Still I think something should be done to give commuters better deals. Most weekly and monthly passes only work out good value if you use them every single day which is ridiculous. If there was a ticket that gave 250 journeys per year at a decent prices that would be fare. Daily users are going to use the train whatever, but there's surely no need to exploit them.
