Time for a winter break for our Suffolk football sides

YOU HAVE to agree with me when I say that the last two Suffolk winters have been the worst we have seen for many years.

Snow used to be something that was exciting now it is seen as an inconvenience. The poor weather has seen major problems for our local football sides, particularly the non league ones.

On Twitter NonLeague Uk summed up the situation brilliantly by saying: "BBC Monthly forecast says 'Much of the UK saw a fairly dry winter overall', try telling that to the fixture secretaries".

Before writing this report I had a look at the fixtures Stowmarket Town have coming up until the end of the season.Lots of these fixtures have been rearranged because of the winter weather.

Stowmarket's footballers are in for a very busy couple of months! You have to remember that the men and women playing in our local teams are not multi-millionaire superstars. They have jobs and families which they can not forget about for a game of football.

We must also think about players safety. There haven't been as many postponements over the last two weeks but the pitches are in a bad state. This could lead to serious injury.

I think the only sensible thing is for there to be a winter break for the non-league between the start of December and the end of February.

My suggestion was met with support at a recent Reserve fixture I attended at Walsham Le Willows Sports Club. One player said:"I think a winter break is a good idea, every year loads of games get postponed".

Another added "I don't mind playing up until the start of June. I would rather do that than play in December and January".

Do you agree with our local footballers? Please share your views and ideas below.

I wander what percentage of matches are postponed in the winter. I bet it is high. Great idea to have a winter reak. Helps the loyal supporters stay warm too!

I agree that a winter break is definitely needed for non-league football but maybe not as long as suggested. A break from the start of December to the start of February should be long enough as I don't remeber many games being called off in Feb. Also the SIL I play in don't start their season until the end of August (a week earlier for senior teams) so why not start a week or two earlier. To avoid playing in cold wet weather and having games postponed the day before or morning of a match I would be more than happy to play until the start of June.
