Stowmarket Police have announced a re-launch of the 'Pubwatch' scheme in a bid to combat antisocial behavior in the town. The police are striving to make locals and visitors feel safer when out at night. The scheme will see an increase in communication between Police and Stowmarket's drinking establishments.

Ideally the scheme will not allow a trouble maker to be thrown out of one establishment and drift to another to continue causing trouble.

PC Barry Abbott quoted on the Suffolk Constabulary website, "The primary goal of Pubwatch is to prevent problems and promote safety. It provides a platform for premises to talk to each other, share concerns and for each premise to take appropriate steps to prevent problems before they arise. Many premises already have access to the town link radio system which provides direct contact with each other, CCTV and the police."

All of Stowmarket's licensed premises were invited to the re- launch of Pubwatch on Wednesday 23rd November which was hosted by the schemes Chairman and Jokers nightclub manager, Mark Naylor.

Representatives from seven of Stowmarket's drinking establishments attended, which included staff from The Riverside Club, The Pickerel Inn, Xcel/Veranda Bar, The Magpie, The Dukes Head and The Oak. Meetings will continue to take place over the next few months.

If you are a member of a licensed Stowmarket drinking establishment and would like to become part of the Pubwatch scheme or would like more information then you can contact PC Barry Abbott from Stowmarket Safer Neighbourhood team by calling 101.

I think the unification of drinking establishments is a fantastic move, if not in place already. It makes perfect sense.
