Hundreds of pounds worth of damage has been caused by a fire at a children's play area in Mill Road, Mendlesham, Just outside Stowmarket, last Friday night.

Fencing and play equipment was damaged by the fire and according to Council members the costs to replace the equipment could be as much as £800. The site will be out of bounds for at least two weeks but areas unaffected by the blaze will still be accessible by the public.

Fire crews from Stowmarket attended the blaze at about 11.40pm after receiving reports of a fire neat Mendlesham primary school. Fire fighters were able to tame and extinguish the fire by 12:05am.

According to Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service the fire may have been started deliberately and might have started in the waste bin attached to the fence at the play site. Local resident Bruce Taylor made the following statement.

"It saddens me to think that someone would do this deliberately. I hope that the culprit comes forward and explains their actions. There is just no rationality to vandalising our play area, all it does is put honest people out and cost the council extra money to put right."

The incident is currently being investigated by police who are appealing for witnesses and have stated that anyone with information should call 101.
