Inspirational anti-knife campaigner Holly Watson may not be from Stowmarket but I believe she deserves mentioning on stowmarketlocalpeople because of the impact her work is having across Suffolk. The Stowmarket commuity can get involved today and make a difference, so I urge you to read on!
The Campaign
If Lewis was punched 3 times instead of stabbed 3 times I believe he would still be alive today - www.idontcarryaknife.org
Holly Watson comes from Sudbury and has suffered the loss of her brother who was stabbed and killed in the town. Since then Holly has campaigned relentlessly against knife crime and is making a huge impact on knife amnesty across Suffolk. Not only does she have a fantastic website full of information (www.idontcarryaknife.org), but has successfully placed knife amnesty bins across Suffolk, which has been well recieved and more importantly, USED. She is also encouraging supporters to help spread the message by wearing wristbands stating her campaigns website address.
Knife Amnesty Bin Locations
Permenant knife bins can be found in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Mildenhall and Lowestoft. Mobile bins can now be found in Sudbury. Should we have one in Stowmarket? So far 4, 327 knives have been handed in!
The Shocking Statistics
According to Holly's website and campaign, knife crime happens every 24 minutes in the UK. Thats hard to imagine is'nt it? There is no point denying the notion that there may well be knife crime taking place in Stowmarket, or indeed any other lovely village, town or city. I would love to think that there is nothing like that going on at all, but we should still help to support knife amnesty and educate. There are more shocking statistics to quote from the website.
50% of young people think it is normal to carry a knife for protection
65% of people who carry knives have their own weapon used against them.
What YOU can do
I urge anyone wanting to learn more about the facts of knife crime and how to handle it, visit Hollys website. It is full of extremely useful information, including what to do if you know someone who has a knife.
Please help spread the word and help Holly carry on her campaign!
