Icy roads have been causing havoc across the U.K. and Stowmarket as the cold snap continues. The snow has yet to melt and the freezing night temperatures are causing the U.K's roads to become potential death traps.  The RAC reported last weekend to be their busiest February ever and the gritter men are working overtime.

Whilst most roads have are being gritted regularly, some of the more rural roads are being ignored, this has caused many local motorists to become concerned when driving on these roads. Stowmarket resident Kevin James said:

"It's like driving on an ice rink out there, I understand that it's not possible to grit all the roads in the U.K. and I agree that the best advice is to stay at home unless it's absolutely necessary to go out"

Police have warned motorists about the dangers of black ice. Black Ice occurs when water on the road freezes rapidly and forms a thin layer of extremely slippery, virtually invisible ice. Rain fall can wash away grit on the roads and then freeze making roads very dangerous. Failure to take necessary precautions when driving on black ice is a major cause of road accidents.Local Resident Kelly white said,

"I thought it looked worse than it was, until I couldn't get out of

my driveway, I've also used my ABS brakes more times this week than in

my entire life. It is especially dangerous at night, I've seen lots of

crashed cars out there."

The cold snap is expected to continue over the next 10 days remaining very cold over the weekend, becoming slightly warmer mid week then getting colder again with higher chances of snow fall at the beginning of next week.

Take care out when driving out there. If you have had an experience with icy roads in Stowmarket please feel free to share by commenting below.
